Hall of Fame

Florida State Horseshoe Pitchers Assn., Inc.

Bob Hilpertshauser

              2013

Born:      April 27, 1937 in Great Barrington, Mass.

Wife:      Pat;  Married since May 26, 1957, with 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters

Bob graduated in 1955 from Roeliff Jansen Central School, Hillsdale, NY. Bob worked for New York Telephone company  in various positions until 1967 when he was transferred to Southern Bell in Cocoa, FL.  Bob was Manager over switching for all of Brevard County until his retirement in 1987 from Bellsouth with over 31 years of service.

Like many persons interested in pitching horseshoes Bob joined a club as well as the national and state organizations. That was in 1989. However Bob did not just pitch. He immediately began to take part in the functioning of the Brevard County Horseshoe Club by becoming the first Secretary/Treasurer. He held that position for three years. He also assumed other tasks and responsibilities in the club, taking on the duties of both the Tournament Director and Vice President. He held both positions for 18 years.

But Bob wanted to do even more. At the urging of club members, who felt he was particularly well qualified, he ran for FSHPA president in 2001. He lost the vote by a narrow margin. This was a set-back but did not dissuade him. Encouragement from local and state members prompted him to run again in 2005. This time he was well supported and won the election.

Before Bob’s first term there was considerable dissension among the EC members. He quickly gained their respect and restored order and discipline to the meetings. His dedication and attention to details became evident. He reviewed the organization of the FSHPA, reestablished an organizational chart, set about to fill vacant positions with qualified members, and asked for job descriptions to ensure the best functionality of the organization. Bob always came to meetings with a firm agenda so that business of the day was conducted in an expeditious, orderly and professional manner.

Bob was re-elected in 2007 and 2009 and served the four years with the same intensity, dedication, and purpose as in his first two years. He decided to retire and not run in 2011. Fate was to dictate otherwise. The newly elected president in 2011 resigned after only a few months in office. The First Vice President then assumed the President’s position and Bob agreed to step in as First Vice President to lend his experience and facilitate the smooth continuity of the change. So Bob again was serving the sport.

Then fate intervened again. The President became ill and resigned at the advice of his doctor. So Bob moved up and was again President of the FSHPA. He is again (or still) lending his experience and expertise in the service of the organization and the sport. In addition it appears, at the moment, that there is no one interested in running for the office in 2013. With that in mind Bob will run for an unprecedented fifth term.

Ask Bob how he feels about these events and he will tell you he loves doing what he does, serving the sport, and feels he has done a good job over the years. I believe others will agree in acclimation.

Bob has held positions and offices of an organizational nature in the sport of horseshoes for over 23 years.

Bob has served as FSHPA president for over eight years and is willing to continue serving as long as he is neeeded to ensure the strength and continuity of the FSHPA organization.

Bob has held the position of Assistant Regional Director since 2007 with the responsibility of  checking  horseshoe pitching facilities on the east coast of Florida to make sure they meet all the measurements and specifications for sanctioned court approval. All the horseshoe pitching facilities were re-certified in 2007 and again in 2011. In 2012 a new horseshoe pitching facility with 18 courts in Flagler County was certified for sanctioned tournaments and a new Florida charter club.

Bob is just an average pitcher, but always encourages others to have fun playing horseshoes.

Bob is very deserving of the Hall of Fame induction because of his service to the FSHPA and the Brevard County Horseshoe Club and for his dedication to organized horseshoes.
