Another
State Tournament in the books! I learn something new every single year – this
year it was about scratch ties in the doubles events. We had one in the mixed
doubles which necessitated pitchers who had already packed up haul out their
equipment again and warm up all over in order to pitch a few extra shoes that
would break the tie for the championship event.
And then it happened again in the Men’s Doubles!
For
those of you who don’t know, we pitch doubles regular classes and the doubles
championship event simultaneously. The
doubles teams in the A classes pitch their regular class which is usually a
handicapped class and we enter all of those scores including the handicap
points into Horseshoe Master. But we also
back out the handicap points and enter the scratch scores into a different
tournament created in Horseshoe Master and this is what determines the doubles
champs. In a scratch game we do not end
in a tie, but rather pitch down and back until the tie is broken.
I
suppose if you don’t keep learning something new then you’re in big
trouble. So thanks everyone for the
lesson!! And thanks to all the scorekeepers and pitchers for their patience as
we muddled through.
State
tournament participation went up a bit this year. We had 27 Mixed Doubles teams, 6 more than
last year; we
had 38 Doubles teams, up from 32 last year;
and 104 singles, 14 more than last year.
Thanks to everyone who participated and who helped to organize, score
keep, set up, clean up and feed us!!
Here
is another reminder about needing 5 tournaments OR 4 tournaments and one
sanctioned league to qualify. Get
started with your planning now using the tournament schedule and be sure to
attend at least 6 or 7 tournaments – over plan just in case you can’t make one
or the club has to cancel.
