Dale
Marteney
Candidate
for FSHPA President
I believe that I have the
drive and motivation to take the FSHPA into the future by raising awareness of
our sport. I would like to see about
bringing the World Tournament to Florida if at all possible.
With the many great people that make up our fantastic association together we
can make ours one of
the best in the nation.
Personal:
I grew up in the great state
of Ohio where my Dad taught me how to pitch horseshoes as a kid. I went to many
tournaments as a
youngster. When my extended family would gather for weekend
get-togethers; there were always horseshoe competitions, guitar playing
and campfires. I
joined the Navy in 1972 and at my first duty station in Point Mugu, California I met Vicki. Over the years I just pitched
at
picnics or when home on leave in Ohio. After retiring in
Orlando, Vicki and I saw a “Horseshoepitching.com” sticker on Byron Jarrett’s
pickup truck as he was driving in at Home Depot in 2005. We
decided to ask him about that and we’ve been involved in pitching ever since.
We are members of the Oviedo
Horseshoe Club where I have been President for the last four years. I have attended the State Closed
Tournament every year since
that fateful fall meeting with BJ and you may remember me as your friendly
Friday night bartender. Vicki and
I attended the World
Tournament last year and had such a great time that we made our hotel
reservations for Topeka before we left
Hamburg.
Work Experience:
I joined the Navy at age
seventeen and spent the next thirty years protecting our country and travelling
where Uncle Sam sent me.
I attained the rank of Command
Master Chief and had several tours as CMC. My favorite tour was the USS George
Washington CVN-73
where I was responsible for the welfare of over 3000
enlisted personnel and over 5,000 when the Airwing
came on board. My training as
Command Master Chief has given
me tools that keep me aware of a vision towards future planning. Upon retiring
from the Navy I worked
at Interlachen Country Club as
golf professional. Not challenged with this endeavor I started teaching NJROTC
and have been doing so for
over ten years now. It is a great job teaching the youth
morals and patriotism that they may not learn anywhere else.
Education:
I earned my high school
diploma, AA and BA while serving on active duty and I completed my Master of
Arts in Theological Studies in
December 2013.
